The film adaptation of the legendary Broadway musical Evil, which was released in the United States on November 22, has started with a stunning success, Reuters reports.

In its opening weekend, the film grossed $114 million domestically and $50.2 million in international markets, for a total of $164.2 million.

This result makes the film the highest-grossing debut among films based on Broadway musicals, since Universal’s Les Misérables, which grossed $103 million in its opening weekend in 2012.

In the domestic US market, Evil is currently the third highest-grossing film of the year, behind only the blockbusters Deadpool and Wolverine and the animated film Inside Out 2.

Other films are also in the running. Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II has reached $221 million in global box office in its second weekend. However, the film has yet to recoup its $250 million budget.

Previously, Warner Bros. Pictures released the first full-length trailer for its upcoming film Minecraft.
