Astana is sending crude oil by tanker across the Caspian Sea for export via the BTC pipeline, which crosses Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey.
Kazakhstan plans to increase annual oil supplies via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline from 1.5 million tons to 20 million tons. The volume of supplies via the pipeline could increase more than 13 times, Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliyev said, according to the Kazakh publication Kursiv.
According to the minister, this year Kazakhstan will export 68.8 million tons of oil, including 55.4 million tons via the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) pipeline to the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiysk.
Reuters reports that increasing oil transit via the BDT will allow Kazakhstan to reduce more than 80% of supplies that currently go through Russia.

In an effort to diversify its oil export routes, Kazakhstan began shipping BTC last year. The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan and KazMunayGas signed an agreement to transport 1.5 million tons of Kazakh oil per year via the pipeline. Exports are expected to begin in April 2023.
